Glyngøre Fjord house

Situated at the breakwater’s edge, between the wild Limfjord and calm marina, the Fjord House unfolds the recreational potential of the site, while displaying the beauty and force of Glyngøre’s natural landscape.

Consisting of a diving tower, swimming lanes, kayak piers, sauna, a multi-purpose space and a submerged auditorium, the Fjord House creates a wide palette of activities. The design allows visitors to experience the waterfront close up, high above, or down beneath the surface. It offers areas that are protected, or fully exposed to the natural elements.

The design is distinctively based on the contrast between the fjord’s wild side and calm side. By merging the harbor functions, marina activities and architectural intervention into a cohesive whole it is an integral part of the breakwater construction. On the ‘wild’ side, the concrete edge of the breakwater rises up and wraps around the building allowing the wooden structure on the ‘calm’ side to open up to the marina. The design of the Fjord House allows children, and adults of all ages to enjoy life on the water’s edge.

THE BORDER THE LIMFJORD

The breakwater marks the border between the calm waters of the marina and the Limfjord’s (at times) wild nature. The shifting tides, wind direction and water depth, transform the fjord with a rhythm that follows the seasons.

THE WILD AND CALM

As it rises from the breakwater, The Fjord House becomes an integral part of the harbor landscape. On the edge between the wild and calm side, it protects the marina while offering a wide palette of recreational possibilities. Architecturally, this wild and calm dichotomy is expressed with a robust concrete façade facing the fjord and a warm wooden structure facing the marina.

Livet i vandkanten

THE LIFE BY THE WATER

Designed as a cluster of volumes that rise between the breakwater rocks, the Fjord House extends out into the surroundings to create varied spatial experiences and niches around the building. Rather than creating a single, monolithic space, the mosaic of different spaces creates a diversity of possible experiences. Some spaces protect from the elements, while others encourage play in the water. There are large gathering spaces that encourage community activity, and smaller, more solitary spaces for the individual.
