Deaconess Foundation

Located in central Frederiksberg, the monastery building is undergoing revitalization as a part of a new masterplan. Although beautiful, its imposing historic architecture, the parking lots surrounding the building, and its monofunctional program make the Deaconess Foundation building appear unapproachable and somewhat detached from its surroundings.

We propose a masterplan of densification and diversification that creates clearly defined and attractive urban spaces, opening the Deaconess Foundation up to a broader public. The objective is to transform the Deaconess Foundation from a place exclusively for the user to a place for the entire city.

The proposal received a first prize in a parallel competition, where the jury highlighted the masterplan, its cohesive landscape concept and the strong architectural expression of the new buildings that reinterpret the historic building.

The future development must respect its heritage, importance and identity in Frederiksberg, while creating a dialogue between new and old.

GREEN CONNECTIONS

Historically and physically, the landscape connects the Deaconess Foundation to its surroundings. It creates new passages between neighborhoods and is the buffer that mediates between new and old.

NEW AND OLD

By reinterpreting the historic architecture, new buildings are added to the Deaconess Foundation in a manner that respects the heritage, but are distinctively contemporary.
