New covered urban space to revitalize city life in Aars

Our sketch proposal for a permanent pavilion covering the central square in the Danish town of Aars is a winner!

The central square in Aars is well known for its spectacular art piece “Muren” (in English: “The Wall”) by famous Danish artist Per Kirkeby, why it has been important to consider the location of the new structure carefully. The project attempts to create an attractive, physical alternative to e-commerce, and to support a flexible use of the square for various outdoor activities year-round.

Our ambition is for the pavilion to become a social and cultural meeting point to the citizens of Aars, while at the same time add to the urban structure by tying the surrounding buildings and streetscapes closer together. The image of the floating roof will, in other words, define the square and its existing functions and qualities more clearly.

The structure is made from wood covered by a tile-clad roof. The selection of locally sourced, durable materials makes the structure simple to build and maintain. A system of build-in, weatherproof curtains will make possible to shield the space furtherly beneath the pavilion.

Next step is to develop the sketch proposal further together with local stakeholders and users. The project is expected to be completed in 2021.
